The results of the election yesterday were a mix of expected, unexpected, disappointing, and exciting. They were also historic. Congratulations to…

  • the first Muslim women elected to congress (Rashida Tlaib (MI) and Ilhan Omar (MN))
  • the first Native American women elected to congress (Deb Haaland (NM) and Sharice Davids (KS), who is also openly LGBTQ)
  • the first black woman elected to represent CT (Jahana Hayes)
  • the first black woman elected to represent MA (Ayanna Pressley)
  • the first Latina women elected to represent TX (Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar)
  • the youngest women elected to congress (Abby Finkenauer (IA) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), both age 29)
  • the first Latina woman elected as governor in NM (Michelle Lujan Grisham)
  • the first woman elected to govern Guam (Lou Leon Guerrero)
  • the first woman elected as governor in ME (Janet Mills)
  • the first openly gay man elected as governor in the US (Jared Polis in CO)

And, for the first time in history, the US will have 100 women in the House of Representatives. There is still much work to be done, but these wins are a sign of progress.
